The car ride from Kathy Woodside’s residence in Washington Township to the Woodbury office of Michael Vanaria, DMD, usually takes about 45 minutes with traffic. Needless to say, she could easily find a dentist a lot closer to home.
But to Woodside—a patient of Dr. Vanaria’s for more than 20 years—the trip is well worth it. From the soothing atmosphere to the exceptional level of care pro- vided by Dr. Vanaria and his staff, there’s no reason to look elsewhere.
“The office is very clean, very professional and you never have to wait long for your appointment, which I appreciate because everyone’s time is valuable,” she says. “Dr. Vanaria is always very conscious of making sure you’re comfortable and making sure there’s no pain, and he’s got such a great personality. When you find a dentist like that you just have to stick with him.”
Dr. Vanaria has fostered that kind of loyalty from his patients since 1985. With two convenient locations in Cinnaminson and Woodbury, his practice offers the full complement of services, including regular cleanings and fillings, root canals, crowns and implants, teeth whitening and Invisalign. His offices specialize in pro- viding custom porcelain prosthetics by an in-house laboratory. All phases of implant restoration are completed in his offices, including placement of the implants as well as the final restorations.
With his wide range of procedures and calming demeanor, it is common for Dr. Vanaria to treat every member of the family.
“Most of our patients are long-standing patients for years and years,” he says. “We have multiple families where we treat three and even four generations. If one person comes, it seems like the entire extended family becomes patients and all of them are happy. It’s very rewarding to know that we have patients who bring in their young children for treatment, knowing that they will have a great experience.”
Woodside is the perfect example. Her entire family—her parents, her brothers and their families, her son and three grandchildren—are all satisfied patients. “It’s a family affair and we all really like him,” she says. “The entire staff is very professional and friendly, and it carries through with the doctor. We’ve all had different types of dental work there and it’s always been top-notch and looks great. I’m happy with the service and I love my hygienist, so there’s no reason to leave.” Dr. Vanaria goes to great lengths to ensure the comfort of every patient.
Patients are also constantly complimenting the relaxing and eclectic music choices, which add to the ambiance.
“As soon as you walk in the door, you get a sense that it’s a very upbeat, positive atmosphere,” Dr. Vanaria says. “Not only me, but the whole staff is really focused on giving our patients as pleasant an experience as you can have at the dentist’s office. We don’t work on anybody feeling any kind of discomfort, and we make sure they know that before we start. We do whatever it takes to get them comfortable and totally anesthetized and we try to take the fear factor out of it by providing them with the most relaxing and comfortable setting, while confidently providing exceptional care.”
That personal attention is what most appeals to Robert Campbell, who recently became a patient. A 20-year veteran of the Army who served two tours in Vietnam, Campbell suffers from PTSD and had issues of anxiety with previous dentists before finding Dr. Vanaria.
“I’m a disabled veteran and I get the best care there,” says Campbell, who visits the Cinnaminson location. “He’s such a friendly person. Usually you see the dentist and they’re quickly out of the room and on to the next patient. He doesn’t do that; he talks to you, he’s very kind and under- standing. I have nothing but nice things to say about the man.”
Dr. Vanaria treats a number of patients with a military background, and this fall will start a regular Saturday gathering in his office for Vietnam veterans to meet and have coffee and doughnuts.
“Who does that today? Nobody,” Camp- bell says. “It helps to have someone who appreciates your service and kind of under- stands what you went through. It’s a great feeling, very comforting. He’s a one-of-a- kind dentist with how he works and how he presents himself.”
“My father-in-law was in the military and it’s important to me to make those patients feel special,” Dr. Vanaria adds. “We always thank them for their service and make them feel welcome.”
Dr. Vanaria’s staff—some of whom have been with him for 25 years—includes Jared Johnson, DMD. Another full-time associate will be coming on board in July to keep up with the popular demand and allow for most procedures to be done on site.
But as important as the latest techniques and gadgets are, in the end it all comes back to creating a warm environment that people want to return to.
“This is not a typical medical office where people are sitting on pins and needles waiting for their appointment,” Dr. Vanaria says. “The staff is happy to work with me and I’m happy to work with them. We make it a positive experience for the patients, who end up going home and encouraging their family and friends to come here.”
